Who’s ready for 2021? I can’t say I’m fully prepared, but as far as new releases go, I couldn’t be more excited! One of the albums I’m most excited for is Breaths’ Lined in Silver (out March 26th). “The Inherent Emptiness” is the third single from the upcoming album, and I have the pleasure of premiering it! Definitely check out the two previous singles (the title track and “The Weight & The Bellows”) when you’re done here, but for now let’s get to this third single, shall we?
Breaths is the one-man-band of multi-instrumentalist Jason Roberts (also of CHNNLR and Conductor fame). His band’s sound could best be described as d o o m g a z e. That being said, it’s a multifaceted project, also pulling influences from post-hardcore, post-metal, and blackgaze. A portmanteau of portmanteaus, if you will. “The Inherent Emptiness” showcases this wonderfully.
Jason pulls off contrasting clean and harsh vocals with ease. Within the first minute of this track the listener is greeted by both his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (ok, I deserve the eyeroll you just gave me for that metaphor…). After about two and a half minutes of doom and despair, everything comes to a halt, leaving one guitar to drone through the abyss. This is where things get taken to the next level. A suspenseful, graceful build-up culminates with the return of the harsh vocals. Combined with the hefty instrumental, the screams sound like some menacing behemoth emerging from a volcano. Then for the finale, the song closes how it began. Jason’s smooth cleans restate the song’s thesis once again, leaving the listener lost in contemplation of the inherent emptiness.

Based on what I’ve heard of the upcoming Breaths album Lined in Silver, I’m comfortable saying this track is among the strongest of the bunch, but Jason is still holding out on the album’s heaviest hitter. The album is a solid 8 tracks long, and from what I can tell, it will be a very strong and engaging album from start to finish. So what are you waiting for, go snag that pre-order now!

Don’t mind me, just stealing that “portmanteau of portmanteaus” line for future use.
Bangin’ track! Super excited for the whole album to land.

Glad you liked the track! I’m always good for at least one solid quip in these things
