Single Premiere: “Fuck The American Dream” by Strangers With Guns

The phrase “modern grunge” may stir unease, conjuring thoughts of yarbled radio rock choruses. But as I’ve stated in past reviews, it’s always a pleasure when bands embrace the ethos of grunge rather than its marketability. With that, Dublin trio Strangers With Guns prove to be another of those great bands with their new single “Fuck the American Dream”. Before I get too deep into it, I’ll give you what you came for and let you take an early listen to the track:

As you have just heard, the song definitely embraces aspects of grunge, as well as its close cousins punk and stoner rock. Rather than aping the Big Four of grunge, Strangers With Guns take their cues from bands like the Melvins, TAD, and Mudhoney. “Fuck The American Dream” is equal parts aggression and apathy, a perfect mix to please moshers and stoners alike.

The song starts with foreboding guitars that have this excellent crusty, yet warm, tone to them. It’s reminiscent of the Melvins album Stag, but not before switching gears to a much more confrontational sound when the bass and drums appear on the scene. The bass tone takes on a corrosive fuzz, while the drums make ample use of pummeling tom and snare fills.

The band’s instrumental approach pairs well with the apathetic vocal performance. Lyrically, the song deals in no subtleties squaring up against the complacency wrought by the American capital machine. Overall, the track makes for an excellent listen, taking the best of the grimier sounds of 90’s and pairing them with a timeless sentiment. Word is this Dublin trio will be releasing a new EP later this year – I look forward to seeing what’s to come!

Strangers With Guns‘ new single “Fuck The American Dream” will be released on April 14th.
